Ever Heard of EUDI Wallet? Does Kenya Need to Have One Too?

Aug 22, 2025

I’ve been following conversations in Europe about the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, and it got me thinking: what if Kenya had something similar, but tailored for us?

So first, let me explain what this EUDI Wallet actually is.

What is the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet?

The EUDI Wallet is part of the EU’s push for a unified digital identity system for its citizens, residents, and businesses. Imagine having a secure mobile app where you can:

  • Store official digital documents like your ID, driving license, or academic certificates.

  • Authenticate yourself when logging into government or private services.

  • Use digital signatures legally recognized across all EU member states.

  • Control which data you share — and with whom.

The idea is to give Europeans a trusted, interoperable digital identity that works across borders while still respecting privacy.

Sounds powerful, right? But here’s the thing: the EUDI Wallet isn’t for us in Africa.

Africa’s Path: Our Own Digital Identity Systems

Here in Africa, countries are charting their own course. The EU’s system is designed for their context, but we’ve got our own needs, challenges, and opportunities.

Take Kenya, for example. We recently launched the Maisha Namba, a unique personal identifier meant to tie into our national ID and service delivery. Nigeria has the NIN (National Identity Number). Ethiopia has Fayda. At the regional level, ECOWAS is working on ENBIC for broader integration.

The motivations are clear:

  • Financial inclusion – ensuring more people can access banking, mobile money, and digital services.

  • Access to services – from healthcare to education to government support.

  • Security and fraud reduction – making identity verification stronger.

But alongside these goals, we also face serious privacy concerns. Who controls our data? Who gets access to it? Can we trust centralized systems not to misuse or expose our identities?

My Perspective: A Kenyan Developer’s Proposal

This is where my heart and mind collide. As a Kenyan developer, I believe we need to go beyond Maisha Namba.

I see a massive opportunity to build a Web3-powered digital identity system for Kenya, one that’s privacy-first, interoperable, and future-proof.

Why Web3? Because it allows us to rethink how identity works. Instead of handing all our data to one central database, we can use Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) to create identities where you prove what’s true without revealing everything about yourself.

Why It’s a Great Idea for Kenya

  1. Maisha Namba is fertile ground
The government has already created the framework. What’s missing is a privacy-first alternative that empowers citizens to selectively disclose information.

  2. Kenya’s Web3 ecosystem is growing
We’re seeing adoption of blockchain, DeFi, and NFT communities here. Building an identity solution locally gives us a chance to lead, not follow.

  3. We can solve real problems

    • Financial inclusion → Imagine proving you’re over 18 to access a loan product without exposing your entire ID.

    • Secure KYC → Banks and fintechs can verify customers without storing huge amounts of sensitive personal data.

The Role of Zero-Knowledge Proofs

ZKPs are magical in their simplicity: prove something is true without revealing the actual data.

For example:

  • I can prove I’m Kenyan without revealing my ID number.

  • I can prove I’m above 18 without revealing my birthday.

  • I can prove I have a university degree without sending the actual certificate.

This is exactly the kind of cryptographic privacy we need in Kenya’s digital identity systems.

Key Technologies and Steps (My Proposal)

Here’s the stack I envision for building this:

  1. On-Chain Layer (Blockchain)

    • Use Ethereum or Polygon (Polygon ID already has identity solutions).

    • Solana is another option for scalability.
This layer ensures immutability and interoperability.

  2. Identity Layer (DIDs and VCs)

    • Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs): These allow each citizen to have a unique, self-sovereign identity.

    • Verifiable Credentials (VCs): Issued by trusted authorities (like schools, banks, government). Citizens hold them in their wallet.

  3. ZK-Proof Generation

    • Tools like circom/snarkjs or Noir can be used to generate ZK proofs.

    • These handle the actual math behind proving something is true without revealing sensitive data.

  4. Wallet Application (Frontend)

    • A mobile-first wallet app where:

      • Citizens store their digital credentials.

      • They choose what to share (selective disclosure).

      • They authenticate securely when accessing services.

Call to Action: Let’s Build This Together

I don’t want this to just be another blog post lost in the internet void. This is a passionate call from me, a Kenyan developer, to anyone who cares about our digital future.

We have the brains, the energy, and the technology. What we need now is collaboration.

If you’re a:

  • Developer (Web3, Blockchain, Frontend, Backend)

  • Designer (UI/UX for wallets and apps)

  • Researcher or Blockchain enthusiast

  • Or simply someone who cares about privacy, financial inclusion, and Africa’s future

👉 Then I want to work with you.

Let’s not wait for Europe to hand us tools that don’t fit our context. Let’s build our own EUDI wallet, Kenyan edition — privacy-first, decentralized, and made for us.

✊🏾 I’m ready to build. Are you with me?
